BUILDING STABILITY IN AN ACCELERATING WORLD
Why Moving Deliberately Beats Constantly Reacting

The pace of change is not merely fast - it is accelerating. Political cycles that once spanned decades now compress into months. Cultural shifts that previously took generations occur within years. The news cycle fragments into hours, and what dominated the headlines yesterday is forgotten today.
This is not merely change; the rate of change itself is accelerating. In response, most men exhaust themselves trying to keep pace, tracking every development and reacting to every controversy. Constant consumption of information replaces deep understanding, and reactivity is mistaken for capability.
The counterintuitive response is deliberate slowness. Moving more slowly as the world accelerates is strategic, not regressive. Building foundations that withstand rapid change creates a profound advantage when others are destabilised. Deliberate movement will always outlast constant reaction.
The Acceleration of Reality
Election cycles now run continuously. Policy debates that once took years to resolve are now settled in weeks. Positions considered mainstream five years ago are now deemed extreme; the Overton window shifts faster than anyone can track.
Social media has dismantled the traditional gatekeepers of information. The 24-hour news cycle demands a constant stream of content, turning everything into "breaking news" so that, in reality, nothing truly is. The sheer volume overwhelms our capacity to process it, causing the signal-to-noise ratio to collapse.
The result? Shared reference points vanish. Assumptions that stood for decades are overturned within months. With no stable foundation for understanding events, everyone exists within a different information environment, rendering consensus impossible.
This creates a state of perpetual crisis. Trying to "stay informed" means constantly consuming information without ever gaining clarity. Knowing what has happened is not the same as understanding what truly matters. The inevitable results are anxiety, reactivity, and exhaustion.
Why Matching Pace Fails
Your attention is finite; acceleration is infinite. You cannot win this game.
Chasing every development sacrifices long-term positioning in favour of short-term reactions. The vital ability to distinguish the important from the urgent is lost. Your time for deep thinking is consumed by superficial engagement, and reactive responses prevent you from taking deliberate, meaningful action.
I maintain strict information discipline precisely because acceleration demands it. Most breaking news requires no response; most controversies resolve themselves, and most developments do not alter what I should do today.
If you treat everything as important, nothing truly important receives the focus it deserves.
Deliberate Slowness as a Strategy
Moving more slowly, then, is not avoidance; it is strategic positioning. Stability becomes a competitive advantage when everyone else is destabilised.
Consider my own experience: I rebuilt my strength through kettlebell training after twenty-five years of neglect. My training is unaffected by the news cycle. Political developments do not influence whether I complete my hundred swings. This physical maintenance fosters stability through fundamentals.
My body grows stronger, irrespective of political seasons. My relationships deepen regardless of cultural shifts. My reading enhances my capabilities beyond the current controversies. These are the foundations that truly matter; the rest is mere noise.
When summer disrupts my training, the September reset is effective because the foundation remains solid. Political acceleration is no different—it disrupts attention and focus. The same principle applies: return to the basics that endure despite external chaos.
Foundations That Endure
What are these enduring fundamentals?
Physical strength matters, regardless of the political situation.
Family bonds endure despite cultural changes.
Principles of character do not expire with the news cycle.
Skills compound over decades, while headlines change hourly.
Your children need your attention, whether or not a controversy dominates social media. Your body requires training, irrespective of election outcomes. Your relationships need maintenance, independent of breaking news. These realities are immutable.
Focusing here grants you permission to disregard most of what feels urgent. This is not ignorance- it is the wisdom to select a different kind of information. It is the understanding that the ability to act matters more than the ability to discuss.
This requires discipline: the restraint to close tabs, the confidence to admit "I don't know" regarding deliberately ignored controversies, and the wisdom to recognise that understanding the fundamentals is more valuable than tracking daily fluctuations.
The Discipline of Strategic Ignorance
I do not follow most news. Instead I use strategic filtering. What has happened matters less than whether it changes what I ought to do.
Most information fails this test. Political controversies forgotten by next week do not require my attention today. Cultural developments that do not impact my responsibilities do not deserve my focus.
This deliberate ignorance creates space for what truly matters: reading books that foster understanding, listening to podcasts, considering long-term positioning, and nurturing relationships.
I impose longer decision-making timelines to filter noise from signal. I refuse to form immediate opinions and wait forty-eight hours before responding to controversies. I allow others to have the first incorrect take while I think clearly.
Ask yourself:
Will this matter next month?
Does this require a response from me?
Does this change what I ought to do today?
Most things fail all three tests.
Seasonal Rhythms as a Counterbalance
Natural seasons provide stability when cultural seasons accelerate. Winter arrives regardless of political cycles. Your body responds to daylight and temperature, not election results. Physical rhythms ground you when human systems become destabilised.
The concept of the September reset applies here, embracing natural cycles rather than resisting them. Winter is a season of consolidation, regardless of whether cultural momentum accelerates. It is a time to build reserves rather than deplete them, and to strengthen foundations instead of reacting to instability.
Modern culture denies the seasons: constant productivity, perpetual crisis, and unending urgency. This is exhausting precisely because it opposes natural rhythms. Working with cycles preserves capacity, whilst resisting them ultimately leads to burnout.
The Margin Connection
Margin becomes increasingly important as acceleration rises. Without a buffer, there is no capacity for filtering. Every development requires a response, as no reserve exists to absorb it.
A strategic reserve allows you to disregard most acceleration. Financial margin ensures that political developments do not precipitate a crisis. Time margin means that breaking news does not demand immediate attention. Physical margin ensures that stress does not impair capability.
Margin allows for deliberate movement because you are not compelled to react constantly. You can pause and reflect, as there is no immediate threat. You can filter information effectively, since stability does not rely on monitoring everything.
A Final Word on the Way Forward
The world will continue to accelerate- let it.
Your task is not to match its pace but to build foundations that can withstand it. Move deliberately while others react constantly. Focus on the fundamentals that endure. Maintain your margin so that chaos cannot force you into reactivity.
Most men will continue to strive to keep up. They will be informed yet anxious, current yet exhausted, reactive yet ineffective.
You will build strength, maintain relationships, think clearly, and act deliberately. When a genuine crisis arises - one that demands a real response - you will have the capacity to respond. Others will be depleted by a thousand false urgencies.
Build stability and maintain it through the storm. This is how capable men navigate volatility, rather than being overwhelmed by it.
